Acharya Balkrishna, the chief aide of Indian Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from the Patanjali Yogpeeth in Hardwar, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday, on charges of obtaining important documents including Indian passport by producing fake academic certificates.

According to Indian news reports, a local CBI court had issued non-bailable warrants against Balkrishna in the case pertaining to his passport having allegedly been made on forged documents. Following this, the local intelligence unit and Hardwar police were asked to detain him and a special team of the CBI later took him into custody.

He originally hails from Syangja of Nepal but his nationality has been in controversy with Indian authorities claiming him to be a Nepali citizen. Balkrishna, his mentor Ramdev and other associates have been claiming that Indian authorities were the labeling fake accusations to weaken the movement against corruption and black money by Anna Hazare  in which Ram Dev is a key face.
