Three immigration officials abscond after being implicated in diplomatic passport misuse scam

Three immigration officials working at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) have absconded after being implicated in the misuse of diplomatic passports in the names of lawmakers Gayatri Sah and Bishwanath Prasad Yadav, Annapurna Post reported.

Section officer Shyam Babu Bhandari, computer officer Nanda Kumar Sunuwar, senior immigration assistant Devidatta Uprety have not gone to the office and are not found at their residences since past few days.

When enquired head of the immigration section at the TIA Khadananda Dhakal said, they filled the leave form without my notice and have remained absent.

Police said, the implicated officers were not even found at their homes. Police started looking for them at their residence and other possible places after the immigration office did not hand them over to them as per their request.

Police had written to the immigration office to handover Bhandari, Sunuwar and Uprety after they were implicated by their colleague Bhuminanda Bhandari arrested a few days ago.

Bhandari mentioned the involvement of his three colleagues during a statement to the police.

The lawmakers, Sah and Yadav, are in police custody for investigation. They are charged of selling their diplomatic passports for a huge sum.

The scam became public when one Prithvi Chhatya carrying Yadav’s diplomatic passport and Sita Sah carrying Sah’s passport were deported from Doha, Qatar when they were going to Australia.

Bhuminanda Bhandari is charged of helping the Prithvi and Sah flee from the airport and submitting the diplomatic passports they used to the lawmakers instead of calling the police. He has been claiming he did so at the instructions of higher officials
