MJF-N suffers another vertical split

Madhesi Janadhikar Forum- Nepal (MJF-N), one of the main constituent of the current ruling coalition, suffered another vertical split on Monday following an intra-party conflict that saw two of its top leaders contesting with each other over whether the party should be part of the UML-led government.

J.P Gupta, who was the co-chair of MJF-N, revolted from the party led by its chairman and foreign minister Upendra Yadav to form a new splinter named Madhesi Janadhikar Forum -Ganatantrik. He had been unhappy with party chair Yadav over the latter's decision to join the current government.

Gupta informed the Constituent Assembly (CA) secretariat today morning about the formation of a new party with 13 of the total 25 CA members/lawmakers of MJF-N.

Gupta has appointed himself chairman as well as the parliamentary party leader of the newly formed party while Nandan Kumar Dutta is the party's deputy parliamentary party leader and Chandrika Prasad Yadav is party's chief whip.

Similarly, Ram Lal Yadav and Sarita Yadav have been appointed party secretary and treasurer respectively.

Other MJF-N lawmakers who have switched to the new party are Raj Kishor Yadav, Atmaram Prasad Sah, Salma Khatun, Om Prakash Yadav, BP Yadav, Ahmad Akmal and Sunita Kumari Sah.

In 2009, the party had suffered its first split after Bijay Kumar Gachhedhar revolted from the party to form Madhesi Janadhikar Forum- Loktantrik with 40 percent of MJF lawmakers.

Chhettri Samaj strike cripples life in eastern region

Normal life in eastern parts of the country has been partially affected due to a bandh (shutdown strike) called by Chhettri Samaj Nepal on Monday.

Vehicles mostly stayed off the road for fear of attacks from bandh organisers while main marketplaces, educational institutions, industries and offices remained largely closed in Morang, Sunsari, Jhapa including few other district of the eastern region.

After receiving assurance from the government that a taskforce will be formed within a month to look into the demands of the Chhettris during talks held with the government representatives at the Ministry of Peace Sunday evening, the Samaj had withdrawn its bandh programme in the Kathmandu Valley for Monday.

Demanding status of indigenous nationality for Chhettris, reservation in state agencies and a different Khas Chhettri state, the Samaj had enforced bandh in the Valley Sunday.

Upper Karnali offices vandalised

An unidentified group has vandalised the offices of Upper Karnali hydroelectric project located in Dailekh district Sunday evening.

The group, about five dozen in number, came to the office and vandalised and set fire in the office buildings saying the project had not done enough for the welfare of the locals.

The 300 MW project is being carried out by Indian firm GMR.

Two security personnel deployed for the protection of the office buildings have been injured in the attack.

UCPN (Maoist) had been protesting against the project. UCPN (M) Dailekh has denied involvement in the attack.

Three immigration officials abscond after being implicated in diplomatic passport misuse scam

Three immigration officials working at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) have absconded after being implicated in the misuse of diplomatic passports in the names of lawmakers Gayatri Sah and Bishwanath Prasad Yadav, Annapurna Post reported.

Section officer Shyam Babu Bhandari, computer officer Nanda Kumar Sunuwar, senior immigration assistant Devidatta Uprety have not gone to the office and are not found at their residences since past few days.

When enquired head of the immigration section at the TIA Khadananda Dhakal said, they filled the leave form without my notice and have remained absent.

Police said, the implicated officers were not even found at their homes. Police started looking for them at their residence and other possible places after the immigration office did not hand them over to them as per their request.

Police had written to the immigration office to handover Bhandari, Sunuwar and Uprety after they were implicated by their colleague Bhuminanda Bhandari arrested a few days ago.

Bhandari mentioned the involvement of his three colleagues during a statement to the police.

The lawmakers, Sah and Yadav, are in police custody for investigation. They are charged of selling their diplomatic passports for a huge sum.

The scam became public when one Prithvi Chhatya carrying Yadav’s diplomatic passport and Sita Sah carrying Sah’s passport were deported from Doha, Qatar when they were going to Australia.

Bhuminanda Bhandari is charged of helping the Prithvi and Sah flee from the airport and submitting the diplomatic passports they used to the lawmakers instead of calling the police. He has been claiming he did so at the instructions of higher officials

Over five dozen vie for vice chancellor post at TU, NSU

Over five dozen academicians have expressed interest to become the vice chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU) or Nepal Sanskrit University (NSU) after the two positions fell vacant on Friday.

The top positions at the nation’s oldest and largest university, TU, and the nation’s only Sanskrit university, NSU, have fallen vacant after erstwhile VC (of TU) Prof Madhav Prasad Sharma and Bidur Paudel’s (of NSU) four year terms ended on Friday.

Education minister Gangalal Tuladhar, also the co-chancellor, has urged interested eligible candidates to submit their action plan, if appointed VC. He has already received over five dozen applications, mostly from academicians interested to become the VC of TU.

Minister Tuladhar has said, he will short-list the candidates based on their background and action plan and take three names for each university for consideration to the Council of Ministers.

NC organises mass assembly 'for peace and timely statute' in Jhapa

Main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) organised a mass assembly in Birtamod of Jhapa Saturday as part of its ongoing people's awareness campaign for peace and timely statute.

Central level leaders including vice president Ram Chandra Paudel, general secretary duo Prakash Man Singh and Krishna Sitaula, and central committee members Sher Bahadur Deuba and Shekhar Koirala addressed the assembly.

Addressing the mass assembly NC leaders stressed on the need for a democratic constitution and accused the UCPN (Maoist) of delaying the peace and the constitution writing process.

The party had started a public campaign claimed to be for timely statute and peace with a mass assembly in Pokhara on April 24.

It is organising national level mass assemblies in three more districts – Dang, Rupandehi and Kanchanpur – before concluding the campaign with a mass assembly in Kathmandu on May 20.

It is also organising district level mass assemblies in various 37 districts at appropriate times.

MJF gets four ministries

Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal has agreed to allocate four ministerial berths in the existing cabinet to Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) led by Upendra Yadav, Saturday.

PM Khanal agreed to appoint four cabinet ministers from MJF at a meeting with MJF chairman Yadav and UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal this evening at his residence in Baluwatar.

As per the agreement, MJF will get a post of Deputy Prime Minister looking after the portfolio of Foreign Ministry, and three cabinet ministries – Ministry for Labour and Transport Management, Ministry for Agriculture and Cooperatives and Ministry for Commerce and Supplies.

MJF chairman Yadav himself is likely to join the government as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs. The party is yet to pick other ministers.

Earlier, MJF had been refusing to join the government demanding four ministries, while the PM Khanal had offered only three. With PM Khanal’s assurance for four ministries, MJF has agreed to join the government.

Khanal, Dahal and Yadav have also agreed to expand the cabinet by Monday. UCPN (Maoist) is yet to recommend more ministers from the party.

Although, there has been an agreement to allocate 11 ministries for UCPN (M), the party has forwarded only four candidates so far.
