Vijaya G. Vaidya dies of cancer, aged 81

Vijaya Gajananda Vaidya, one of Nepal’s most respected entrepreneurs, died Sunday morning after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 81.

Vaidya, chairman of Vaidya Organisation of Industries and Trading Houses (VOITH), who had long been suffering from brain tumor died at his home at Budhanilkantaha, in the outskirts of Kathmandu at around 8 am today.

He had established VOITH, one of the most dynamic business houses of the country dealing in automobile imports, tea exports and construction, at the age of 29. The company now employs more than 7,000 people and is among the top business houses that contribute significantly to the national coffer.

Also known for his business acumen and numerous social works in the country, Vaidya is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter.

Vaidya died a week after his elder son, Suraj Vaidya, was elected the President of Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI), the umbrella organization of the country’s private sector.
