Police detained three Chinese nationals for operating illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) in the capital on Friday.
The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police raided their residence in Chhetrapati and arrested the members of the VOIP racket along with the equipments used.
Nepal Telecom has been bearing a loss worth tens of millions of rupees from illegal VOIP operations.
This is the first time Chinese nationals have been detained for illegal bypassing activities. Previously, Bangladeshi and Nepali nationals were arrested for operating illegal VOIP.
According to the Telecommunication Act-1997, the person who has caused loss to the telecommunication by call bypassing will be fined with an equal amount to the loss or five-year jail term or both.
