Bhattarai’s meeting with Saran triggers controversy in UCPN (Maoist)

The one-on-one meeting between Unified CPN (Maoist) vice chairman Baburam Bhattarai and Indian Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh’s special emissary Shyam Saran last week has triggered controversy in the party.

Talking to BBC Nepali Service Sunday, Maoist politburo member Barsha Man Pun ‘Ananta’ dubbed the meeting as a ‘mistake’ and opined the party should take clarification from Bhattarai over the need for a one-on-one meeting.
‘Why was it necessary for him to meet Saran one-on-one when all the office-bearers had jointly met him (Saran),’ said Pun. ‘The meeting verifies speculations that he (Bhattarai) is close to the Indian establishment.’
Maoist vice chairman Bhattarai had met with Saran, one-on-one for two hours, at Hotel Dwarikas’ soon after Saran’s joint meeting with the Maoist office-bearers. The news of the private meeting became public only after two days.
