Police reveal Dr Shrestha secured his release after paying 3.5 kg gold in ransom

Police have revealed that Dr Bhakta Man Shrestha, Executive Director of BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Bharatpur, Chitwan, was freed by his abductors after his family paid 3.5 kg gold in ransom.

Organising a press conference at the police headquarters Thursday, police officials said the kidnapping gang led by Bhimsen Pandit took him to Nuwakot, Kathmandu and Chitwan during 15 days of captivity and released him after receiving the ransom in India.
Shrestha family paid the hefty ransom to Rohit Paliwal, an Indian national involved in the abduction, police said.

Three of the gang members, Dr Shrestha's former driver Badri Dhungana of Nuwakot, Sunil Shrestha of Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, and Nabin Chhettri of Darjeeling, India, have come into the police net so far and that the gang leaders Bhimsen Pundit, 37, of Nuwakot and Rohit Paliwal, 30, are still at large. Police brought the three arrested men before the media today.
An investigation team led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Devendra Subedi, chief of Narcotics Drugs Control Law Enforcement Unit and former chief of the crime division, arrested them after a long investigation.
Meanwhile, Dr Shrestha's family is reportedly unhappy with the arrest. "We would have been happy if all involved in the abduction had been arrested. We are worried there could be increased threat as only a few are arrested," news reports quoted a family member.
The abductors had threatened Dr Shrestha that they would kill him if the police searched for them, according to the family members.
Dr Shrestha was abducted from Chitwan on May 19 when he was on his way from hospital and released on June 5 at Majhimtar on the border of Dhading and Chitwan
