Unidentified assailants shot dead one government officer in Bhairahawa on Saturday night.
The deceased has been identified as Jit Bahadur Thapa of Lakhanchowk in Rupandehi district.
Thapa was working as a Junior Technical Assistant (JTA) at an agriculture research institute in Bhairahawa.
Reports quoted policed as saying that the armed group of men had entered the house of Thapa by breaking open the locks at the main gates at around 9:30 pm.
They shot Thapa after he attacked one of the armed men trying to grab the gold earring his daughter Anupa was wearing and rob other belongings.
Thapa was later taken to Bhim Hospital in Bhairahawa where he succumbed to his bullet injuries.
Police said they have started a manhunt to nab the assailants
